Tule Elk
Tule Elk are the smallest of all the Elk species in North America.
Endemic to California, the adult bulls average about 450-500 pounds and
stand about 4 to 5 feet in height at the shoulder.
The elk's rutting, season begins at the end of July and continues through the middle of October in Northern California. During this time, they can be dangerous to approach because male elk, or stags, are competing for the females.
The male's bugle, or clear whistle, is frequently heard and typifies the rutting season. A large herd of Tule Elk live on the western point of the Point Reyes National Seashore.
